First attested in 1372. From -l (ablative suffix) +‎ -g (emphatic element).[1]

  1. (adverb-forming suffix) -ly. Mainly added to an adjective suffixed with -i and to a present participle to form an adverb. In the past, it was added to different parts of speech.
    egyhangú (unanimous) + ‎-lag → ‎egyhangúlag (unanimously)

    -lag is added to back-vowel words
    -leg is added to front-vowel words
