Etymology 2
[edit]From Proto-Athabaskan *ɣʸikʸ ~ *ɣʸitšʼʷ (“to breathe, to rest”), later confused with Proto-Athabaskan *ɣ̇en (“to melt, to thaw”).
Cognate with the root -DZÍÍʼ (“to breathe”), which can ultimately be analyzed as d- (classifier) + -YÍÍʼ (?), and with -YIH (“to pant”). Compare also Navajo ayih (“breath”).
