Suffix

라니 • (-rani)

1. Alternative form of 다니 (-dani), used in the environments where 라 (-ra) is required. In particular, always used after the stem of 이다 (-ida, “to be”, copula), whether present or elided, and its negative 아니다 (anida, “to not be”).

   스폰지가 동물이라니. ― Seuponji-ga dongmur-i-ra-ni. ― How can a sponge be an animal?

   우리나라가 일본보다 큰 게 아니라니. ― Urinara-ga Ilbon-boda keun ge ani-ra-ni. ― Wow, Korea isn't bigger than Japan.

   저 자그만 것이 나무라니. ― Jeo jageuman geos-i namu-ra-ni. ― Wow, to think that such a little thing is a tree.

2. Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see 라 (-ra),‎ 니 (-ni)— equivalent to 라고 하니 (-ra-go ha-ni).

   여기도 위험한 곳이라니 나갑시다.

   Yeogi-do wiheom-han gos-i-ra-ni nagapsida.

   Since they say it's dangerous here as well, let's leave.

3. Post-vowel and post-liquid allomorphic form of 으라니 (-eurani).

   나보고 가라니 가야지. ― Na-bogo ga-ra-ni gayaji. ― Since you tell me to go, I have to go.
