Inherited from Old East Slavic ручити (ručiti, to entrust, to instruct), from рука (ruka) + -ити (-iti) (equivalent to Russian рука́ (ruká) +‎ -и́ть (-ítʹ), based on the expression дати на руку (dati na ruku, to give back, to instruct).
