Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dęgati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰengʰ-, *dʰn̥gʰ- (to cover, conceal). By surface analysis, дягти (djahty) +‎ -а́ти (-áty). Cognate with Lithuanian deñgti (to cover, to dress).
