Ashokan Prakrit

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

    Inherited from Sanskrit เคธเค‚เคตเคคเฅเคธเคฐ (saแนƒvatsara).

    Noun

    [edit]

    ๐‘€ฒ๐‘€๐‘€ฏ๐‘€™๐‘€ญ (saแนƒvachara /saแนƒvacchara/) m

    1. (especially in the singular) year

    Usage notes

    [edit]

Turner[1] notes that ๐‘€ฏ๐‘€ฒ (vasa) is almost always used in the plural (except when in a compound, which is where we find the lemma form usually), while the singular form is supplied by ๐‘€ฒ๐‘€๐‘€ฏ๐‘€™๐‘€ญ (saแนƒvachara). This suppletion is similar to the situation in Rigvedic Sanskrit, where เคธเค‚เคตเคคเฅเคธเคฐ (saแนƒvatsara) (and once เคชเคฐเคฟเคตเคคเฅเคธเคฐ (parivatsara)) is the singular and เคนเคฟเคฎเคพ (himฤ) is the plural.

However, some Southern inscriptions attest ๐‘€ฒ๐‘€๐‘€ฏ๐‘€™๐‘€ญ (saแนƒvachara) in the plural as well. See Alternative forms for a detailed breakdown.
