    From Proto-Iranian *upári, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *upári, from Proto-Indo-European *upér.

    Cognates include English over, Latin super (whence English super), Ancient Greek ὑπέρ (hupér), Old Armenian վեր (ver), German über, Avestan 𐬎𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌 (upairi).
