From Scythian *mava (“hero, tiger”) (cf. Khotanese mauya, muyi (“tiger”); Sogdian 𐼺𐼷𐼴 (myu), 𐫖𐫏𐫇 (myu, “tiger”)).[1]

Cognate with Ancient Greek Μαύης (Maúēs).
