From Proto-Germanic *luhatjaną, whence also Old High German lohazan (“to gleam”). Equivalent to the zero grade of the root of 𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌷𐌰𐌸 (liuhaþ) +‎ -𐌰𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (-atjan).
