Etymology

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 일ᄏᆞᆮ다 (Yale: ilkhot.ta). From the now-obsolete verbs *잃— (*ilh-, to call) + ᄀᆞᆮ— (kot-, “to say”) + —다 (-da, ending). Related to 이름 (ireum).
