Reconstruction notes

[edit]

This word is attested 104 times across the known Old Korean interpretative gugyeol glosses to the Buddhist canon.

Per Old Korean orthographic convention, the first character is a logogram, giving the meaning of "(to) name", while the second character is a phonogram for the syllable *-ha. The Old Korean orthography gives no clues as to how should be read, as it is used solely for its meaning, but this word is conventionally reconstructed as *ILh-a, the infinitive of the verb stem *ILh- "to name". While its hypothetical Middle Korean descendant *잃다〮 (*ìlh-tá) is unattested, derived forms such as the noun 일홈〮 (ìlhwóm, name), originally its gerund form, and the compound verb 일ᄏᆞᆮ다〮 (ìlh-kòt-tá, to name, literally to name and say) are attested.

This word fell out of use by Middle Korean times, to be replaced by the derivative 일ᄏᆞᆮ다〮 (ìlkhòt-tá).
