Etymology

[edit]

Sino-Korean word from (moon) + (moon) + (mountain) + (mountain). A visual pun based on 파자 (破字, paja, “splitting of a Chinese character into individual components”); the character (bung, friend) is equivalent to a horizontal duplication of (wol, moon), and the character (chul, to leave) appears almost identical to a vertical duplication of (san, mountain).
