Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from English cigar via a Southern variety of Chinese.

Folk etymology commonly describes poet Xu Zhimo (1897–1931) as coining this translation in 1924, in a casual conversation with Rabindranath Tagore, on the grounds that the cigar is similar to lotus stem () and the ash is similar to snow (). However, this term had already been used in 出使英法義比四國日記續, a late 19th century text, and Officialdom Unmasked, a 1903 Northern Wu novel.
