[edit]連 (ren, “consecutive; successive”) + 投 (tō). For the baseball sense, 投 is likely a shortening of 投げる (nageru, “to throw”), and for the internet sense, 投 is likely a shortening of 投稿する (tōkō suru, “to post”).
