Etymology
[edit]Shortened from Japanese 花蓮港 (Karenkō), from Hokkien 洄瀾/洄澜 (Hôe-liân) during Qing-era settlement in 1851. Formerly named 奇萊/奇莱 (Kî-lâi), referring to the Sakiraya Taiwanese aborigines and their settlement.
