Etymology

Short for 如臨深淵如履薄冰如临深渊如履薄冰 (rúlínshēnyuān, rúlǚbóbīng, “as if on the brink of a chasm; as if treading upon a thin layer of ice”). See 戰戰兢兢战战兢兢 (zhànzhànjīngjīng) for details.
