[edit]Derived from 紅葉た (momita, the 未然形 (mizenkei, “irrealis form”) of Old Japanese verb 紅葉つ (⟨momi1tu⟩ → momitsu), “to turn, said of leaves”) + す (su, “to do”).
The kanji spelling is from 紅葉 (kōyō).
