Etymology

Superficially of 烏帽子(えぼし) (eboshi, priest's cap) + がら, but the origin of the latter portion is uncertain. Compare etymology at 山雀(やまがら) (yamagara, varied tit). Compare also 小雀(こがら) (kogara, willow tit), 四十雀(しじゅうから) (shijūkara, Japanese tit).
