Etymology
[edit]Compound of 意趣 (ishu, “grudge”) + 返し (kaeshi, “a returning, a return”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 返す (kaesu, “to return something”)).[1][2][3][4] The kaeshi changes to gaeshi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First cited in a text from 1711.[1]
