Etymology
[edit]Probably a Kra-Dai loanword; cf. Zhuang ranz (“house”) and etymologies therein. Possibilities include
- From syllable-extending a source word with initial consonant cluster (**q-ran > *k-ran > Chinese /kɑn lɑn/); furthermore, the Old Chinese 闌 (OC *ɡ·raːn) may have been a cognate rooted in the ancestral language (Lan, 2010, and references therein).
- Alternatively, the first syllable 干 may have derived from a classifier prefixed to the "house" noun-stem in an early dialect of Zhuang (Wei, 2011).
