Etymology
[edit]Originally a compound of 姬 (pi1me1, “princess → woman, girl”) + の (no2, possessive particle) + 遊び (aso1bi1, “play, playing”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 遊ぶ (aso1bu), “to play, enjoy”).
Due to absence of vowel clusters in most Old Japanese terms, the の (no2) and あ (a) of aso1bi1 fused into な (na).
