Etymology

From Old Japanese 姬遊び (pi1me1naso1bi1), itself a contraction of 姫 (hime, “girl”, literally “[sun appellation] + girl, woman → princess”) + の (no, possessive particle) + 遊び (asobi, “play, playing”) by reduction of vowel clusters.
