Etymology

[edit]

From a translation of the New Testament, Gospel of Matthew 4:4, "man shall not live on bread alone".[1]

Phrase consisting of (hito, person; man, mankind, humanity) + (wa, topic particle) + パン (pan, bread) + のみ (nomi, only) + にて (ni te, copular conjunction, "on, by means of") + 生くる (ikuru, living, that lives), classical attributive of 生く (iku, to live, to be alive) + (mono, person; being) + (ni, copular particle) + あらず (arazu, is not, classical copula あり (ari) in the negative conjugation).

The Japanese literally parses out to "man is not a being that lives only on bread".
