[edit]From the verb ῠ̔ποτῐ́θημῐ (hupotíthēmi, “put down, pledge”). Morphologically, from ὑπο- (hupo-, “under”) + -θήκη (-thḗkē, “case, holster”). Other suggestion, from ὀπτῐκός (optikós, “of or for sight”).
