Etymology

From the verb ῠ̔ποτῐ́θημῐ (hupotíthēmi, put down, pledge). Morphologically, from ὑπο- (hupo-, under) +‎ -θήκη (-thḗkē, case, holster). Other suggestion, from ὀπτῐκός (optikós, of or for sight).
