Etymology 2
[edit]From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *la (“donkey, ass, mule”); cognate with the first syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (lo³¹ kuŋ³³, “donkey”) (STEDT). Note also similarities to Old Chinese 驢 (OC *b·ra, “donkey”).

[edit]From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *la² (“question particle”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *la-y (“idem”). Compare perhaps Old Chinese 與 (OC *la, *laʔ, *las), 歟 (OC *la, *laʔ, *las, “idem”) (STEDT).
