From Proto-Karen *ʔlaᴬ (moon, month) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *la⁴ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/ɡ-la (moon; month). Cognate with S'gaw Karen လါ (lah), Western Pwo လၩ, Eastern Pwo လာ (), Western Kayah ꤜꤢꤧ꤭ (lāe), Burmese (la.).
