Etymology

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (jɔk⁴ kjɑ³ "man"). Looks like a compound of ယောက် (yauk, classifier for people) + an element ကျား (kya:) of uncertain interpretation. The "male" meaning of ကျား (kya:) appears to be abstracted from the word ယောက်ျား itself, and itself might not trace back with a separate "male" sense to Proto-Sino-Tibetan; perhaps the original denotation was "tiger"? Thus, "tiger-type person" > "man, male".”
