Inherited from Old Burmese ခုယ်း (khuy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-kʷəj-n (dog). Compare Tibetan ཁྱི (khyi, idem), Old Chinese (OC *kʰʷeːnʔ, “idem”) (STEDT).
