ကွဲ

Burmese

[edit]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /kwɛ́/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: kwai: • ALA-LC: kvai • BGN/PCGN: kwè: • Okell: kwè

Etymology 1

[edit]

Base counterpart of ခွဲ (hkwai:, to split; half). STEDT gives no further etymology (kwɛ⁵⁵ "split up (bamboo pole)"), while Luce gives Old Chinese (OC *kʷraːds, “to split”) (which seems to be better reflected in modern Sino-Xenic via (OC *kʷeːd, *qʰʷeːd, “to burst, break, determine”), which appears to be a derivative) as a cognate.[1]

Etymology 2

[edit]

The "mooring post" sense is treated as separate from the "separated" sense by MED and not mentioned by STEDT or Luce, though it is plausible that it derives from a semantic extension of the "separated" sense, as a "separating point" away from vast waters.
