Etymology 1

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔ-gla² (“between; to have a space between; interval”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gla (“interval, space between”). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (khà, “in between”) (STEDT); outside of Lolo-Burmese, compare Old Chinese 間 (OC *kreːn, *kreːns, “section, between, interval (of time and/or space)”).[1] Hill (2019) (p. 251) adduces 加 (OC *kraːl, “to add”), Tibetan བཀྲལ (bkral, “to appoint”), and ཁྲལ (khral, “tax”) as phonetically-sound cognates.

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *(k/g)ra (“to hear, listen, sound”); cognate with Tibetan སྒྲ (sgra, “sound, voice”) (STEDT). Luce additionally compares Old Chinese 喈 (OC *kriːl, “to resound; melody”).[2] Note also similarities to 諫 (OC *kraːns, “to admonish”), 聆 (OC *reːŋ, “to listen carefully”).
