[edit]Etymology
[edit]An Indo-Aryan innovation, derived from Arabic شُكْر (šukr, “thankfulness, gratitude”, the verbal noun of شَكَرَ (šakara, “to thank”)) + ـِيَّة (-iyya). Compare Bengali শুকরিয়া (śukriẏa), Dhivehi ޝުކުރިއްޔާ (šukuriyyā), Hindustani शुक्रिया (śukriyā) / شُکْرِیَہ (śukriya), Punjabi ਸ਼ੁਕਰੀਆ (śukrīā) / شُکْرِیَہ (śukriyah) (see Arabic شُكْر (šukr) for all cognates).
Not borrowed from Arabic شُكْرِيَّة (šukriyya) nor from Persian شکریه (šokriyye), which don't have such meanings.
