Etymology

[edit]

An Indo-Aryan innovation, derived from Arabic شُكْر (šukr, thankfulness, gratitude, the verbal noun of شَكَرَ (šakara, to thank)) + ـِيَّة (-iyya). Compare Bengali শুকরিয়া (śukriẏa), Hindi शुक्रिया (śukriyā)/Urdu شُکْرِیَہ (śukriya), Punjabi ਸ਼ੁਕਰੀਆ (śukrīā)/شُکْرِیَہ (śukriyah) (see Arabic شُكْر (šukr) for all cognates).

Not borrowed from Arabic شُكْرِيَّة (šukriyya) nor from Persian شکریه (šokriyye), which don't have such meanings.
