Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀡𑀭 (vāṇara), from Sanskrit वानर (vānara), vṛddhi derivative of वनर (vanara, “anything related to forest”), from वन (vana, “forest”) + -र (-ra, adjectival suffix). Doublet of વાનર (vānar). Cognate with Assamese বান্দৰ (bandor), Bengali বাঁদর (bãdor), Hindi बंदर (bandar), Punjabi باندر / ਬਾਂਦਰ (bāndar), and Sindhi باندر / बांदरु (bāndru).
