Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀞𑀡𑁆𑀠 (ṭhaṇḍha, cold, blunted), from 𑀞𑀟𑁆𑀠 (ṭhaḍḍha, sluggish, slow) with contamination of -ṇ- from a derivative of Proto-Dravidian *taṇ (cold), from 𑀣𑀤𑁆𑀥 (thaddha, firm, fixed) with retroflexion, from Sanskrit स्तब्ध (stabdha, firm, stiff),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stabdʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ-tós, with semantic shift. Cognate with Kashmiri थंड् (thaṃḍ), Bengali ঠান্ডা (ṭhanḍa), Nepali ठण्डा (ṭhaṇḍā), Hindi ठंड (ṭhaṇḍ), Marathi थंड (thaṇḍa).
