Inherited from Middle Assamese সৰিহ (xoriho), সৰিয়স (xoriox), from Early Assamese সৰিষ (soriṣo), *সৰিষৱ (soriṣowo), from Prakrit 𑀲𑀭𑀺𑀲𑀯 (sarisava), from Sanskrit সৰ্ষপ (sarṣapa, mustard seed). Cognate with Sylheti ꠢꠂꠞꠧ (hoiró), Bengali সরষে (śorśe), Odia ସୋରିଷ (sorisha), Hindustani سرسوں / सरसों (sarsõ).
