[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian دیوانه (dēwāna), derived from Middle Persian [script needed] (dyw'nk' /dēwānag/), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *daywánah (“demon possessed; insane, crazy”), from *daywáh (“demon”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *daywás (“high-ranking supernatural entity”), whence also দেও (deō), দেব (deb), দেবতা (debota), and দেবী (debi). Compare Hindustani دیوانہ / दीवाना (dīvānā).
