Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian دیوانه (dēwāna), from Middle Persian [script needed] (dyw'nk' /dēwānag/, “demonic; crazy, insane”). Compare Bengali দেওয়ানা (deōẇana), Gujarati દીવાનું (dīvānũ), Marathi दिवाणे (divāṇe), Punjabi ਦਿਵਾਨਾ (divānā), ਦੀਵਾਨਾ (dīvānā).
