[edit]Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀳𑀸𑀦𑀻 (kahānī), the feminine form of 𑀓𑀳𑀸𑀦 (kahāna), from Sanskrit कथानक (kathānaka, “short tale”), the diminutive of the vriddhi of कथन (kathana, “narration”). Cognate with Assamese কাহিনী (kahini), Odia କାହାଣୀ (kāhāṇi), Hindustani کَہَانِی (kahānī) / कहानी (kahānī), Marathi कहाणी (kahāṇī), Punjabi ਕਹਾਣੀ (kahāṇī) / کَہانی (kahānī), Gujarati કહાણી (kahāṇī). Doublet of কথা (kotha), কথপোকথন (kothopōkothon), and কহা (koha).
