Etymology

From Sanskrit অষ্ঠীৱৎ (aṣṭhīvat), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *HaṣṭʰiHwánts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HastčiHwánts. Cognate with Sylheti ꠀꠑꠥ (aṭú), Bengali হাঁটু (hãṭu), Odia ଆଣ୍ଠୁ (āṇṭhu).

     aṇṭhu kaṛhi riṅgo paṛi phura brojo majhe,
     söṇaro ghuṅgurocoyo koṅkaloto baje.

     Genuflecting (snatching knees), crawling, you roam in Braja,
     The golden ghungurs ring on the waist.
