Proto-Indo-Iranian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Per Lubotsky, a compound of Proto-Indo-Iranian *HástʰH (“bone”) and the derivative of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kiHu- (“shin”). The first element is from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ésth₁. According to Martirosyan, the second element is independently reflected in Old Armenian ճիւ (čiw), an Iranian borrowing; compare also Proto-Slavic *cě̄và (“shin, bobbin”).
