Inherited from Sanskrit अष्ठीवत् (aṣṭhīvat), but the initial emphatic particle was added due to comparison with হাঁটা (hãṭa, “to walk”). Cognate with Assamese আঁঠু (ãthu), Chakma 𑄃𑄙𑄪 (ādhu), Rohingya añçú. Doublet of আঁঠু (ãṭhu).
