Inherited from Prakrit *𑀳𑀁𑀝𑀇 (*haṃṭaï, moves, goes). See there for more. Cognate with Assamese হাঁঠ (hãth), Sylheti ꠀꠐꠣ (aṭa), Hindi हटना (haṭnā) and Gujarati હઠવું (haṭhvũ). Unrelated to, but influenced, হাঁটু (hãṭu, knee).
