Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *sarp-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sarp-, from Proto-Indo-European *serp- (“to creep, crawl”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἕρπω (hérpō, “creep, crawl”) whence ἕρπης (hérpēs), Proto-Albanian *serpena, Latin serpō whence serpēns (“serpent”).
