Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *sr̥prás, from Proto-Indo-European *sl̥p-rós, from *selp- (“fat, oil”). Cognate with Old English sealf (whence English salve), Middle Persian clp (/čarb/), whence Persian چرب (čarb). See also Sanskrit सर्पिस् (sarpís, “melted butter, ghee”).
