From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sarpíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sarpíš, from Proto-Indo-European *selp-ís, from *selp- (fat, oil). Cognate with Old English sealf (whence English salve), Middle Persian clp (/⁠čarb⁠/), whence Persian چرب (čarb). See also सृप्र (sṛprá, greasy, smooth).
