Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sarpíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sarpíš, from Proto-Indo-European *selp-ís, from *selp- (“fat, oil”). Cognate with Old English sealf (whence English salve), Middle Persian clp (/čarb/), whence Persian چرب (čarb). See also सृप्र (sṛprá, “greasy, smooth”).
