Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *suHkarás (“pig, boar”), from Proto-Indo-European *suH- (“pig, hog, swine”).
Cognate with Ancient Greek ὗς (hûs, “pig”), Latin sūs (“pig”), Avestan 𐬵𐬏 (hū), Persian خوک (xuk), Old English swīn (whence English swine), English sow, Bulgarian свиня́ (svinjá).
