Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śrutás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćrutás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlutós, from *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Cognate with Old English hlūd (whence English loud). By synchronic analysis, the past participle of the root श्रु (śru, “to listen, hear”).[1]
