Etymology
[edit]Of uncertain origin. Related to मन्दुरा (mandurā, “horse stable”), and, along with Ancient Greek μάνδρα (mándra, “enclosed space; barn”), perhaps borrowed from an unidentified third source. Turner derives both Sanskrit words from a hypothetical root *मन्द् (mand, “to stand still”), which also gives मन्द (manda, “slow, tardy”).
