Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Related to मन्दुरा (mandurā, horse stable), and, along with Ancient Greek μάνδρα (mándra, enclosed space; barn), perhaps borrowed from an unidentified third source. Turner derives both Sanskrit words from a hypothetical root *मन्द् (mand, to stand still), which also gives मन्द (manda, slow, tardy).
