Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀪𑀟𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀤𑀺 (*bhaḍakkadi, to make a sudden movement or noise), from 𑀪𑀟𑀓𑁆𑀓 m (bhaḍakka, noise), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀝𑁆 (*bhaṭ, sudden movement or noise) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-). Probably also related to Sanskrit भटभटायते (bhaṭabhaṭāyate, gurgles). Cognate with Gujarati ભડકવું (bhaḍakvũ), Marathi भडकणे (bhaḍakṇe), Sindhi ڀَڙْڪَڻُ / भड़कणु, Punjabi ਭੜਕਣਾ (bhaṛkaṇā) / بھڑکݨا (bhṛkṇā), Maithili भड़कब (bhaṛᵊkab) / 𑒦𑒛𑓃𑒏𑒥 (bhaṛakaba), Odia ଭଡ଼କିବା (bhaṛakibā).
