[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *pláwatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pláwatay, from Proto-Indo-European *pléw-e-ti, from *plew- (“to float, swim”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬎𐬯𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬃𐬥𐬙𐬈 (usfrauuā̊nte), Ancient Greek πλέω (pléō, “to float, sail”), Old English flotian (whence English float).
